Job Description
As the Senior Structural Steel Detailer – Tender & Pre-Construction, you will play a critical role in supporting the sales and estimating function by rapidly producing preliminary 3D models and material take-offs for commercial and industrial steel projects across New Zealand. Unlike traditional project-stage detailing roles, this position focuses on early-stage modelling from tender or incomplete information, enabling the business to price projects accurately and assess constructability prior to award.
You will utilise TEKLA Structures to quickly generate structural models, extract steel quantities, and apply standard connection assumptions where required. Your work will directly inform estimating accuracy, project feasibility, and commercial decision-making.
This role requires a commercially aware and pragmatic detailer who can balance speed and accuracy, make reasonable engineering assumptions, and clearly document modelling logic so outputs can later be refined into fabrication-ready drawings if projects are awarded.
- Produce preliminary 3D structural steel models using TEKLA Structures based on tender-stage, conceptual, or incomplete design information.
- Generate material take-offs and quantity outputs (steel tonnage, plates, bolts and fittings) to support the estimating and tendering process.
- Apply standardised preliminary connections and detailing assumptions to enable rapid modelling and quantity generation.
- Work collaboratively with estimating and sales teams to support pricing strategies, construction planning, and bid submissions.
- Assist in assessing construction methodology and erection sequencing, providing input on practical build approaches where required.
- Identify and proactively flag constructability risks, obvious clashes, or design conflicts within preliminary models.
- Make practical modelling assumptions where design information is incomplete, clearly documenting these for later project-stage refinement.
- At times, undertake full detailing and modelling packages where required to support project delivery.
- Maintain clear model organisation and documentation to ensure work can transition efficiently into detailed shop drawing production if projects are awarded.
- Participate in internal discussions with project, sales, and estimating teams to improve modelling efficiency and tender accuracy.
- Maintain model and file organisation according to company and project standards.
- Adhere to company QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety and Environment) policies at all times.
- Proven experience as a Structural Steel Detailer, ideally within the New Zealand or Australian construction market.
- Experience working from preliminary, conceptual, or tender-stage documentation.
- Advanced capability in TEKLA Structures or comparable 3D steel detailing software.
- Strong understanding of structural steel systems, typical steel connections, and fabrication practices.
- Understanding of construction sequencing and erection methodology for structural steel projects.
- Ability to work efficiently and produce outputs quickly, balancing speed with reasonable accuracy.
- Competency in exporting and interpreting material quantity take-offs from TEKLA models.
- Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings.
- Familiarity with relevant steel standards such as AS/NZS 1554.1 and AS/NZS 5131 desirable.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate with estimators, sales teams, and project stakeholders.
- Competency in Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, Outlook).
