This company is developing a synthetic biology platform that allows scientists to design, simulate, and debug genetic systems at scale. Their technology combines biology, software engineering, and advanced computation to accelerate the development of next-generation therapeutics. The team is building tools that transform biological engineering into a true engineering discipline. They are now hiring a Staff Software Engineer to help architect the core platform used by scientists and researchers to design complex biological systems. The Role You will play a key role in designing and evolving a platform used by bioengineers to design, search, and analyze genetic constructs. This is a highly technical role with significant architectural ownership. You will collaborate closely with synthetic biologists, computational scientists, and product teams to build systems that model complex biological data and workflows. The platform handles highly structured scientific data and requires thoughtful API design, scalable architecture, and robust backend systems. What You’ll Do - Design and implement backend architecture that will shape the platform for years - Build GraphQL APIs for querying and analyzing genetic construct data - Develop services using Python, SQLAlchemy, and modern backend frameworks - Architect complex data models representing biological systems - Collaborate directly with scientists to understand workflows and translate them into software tools - Design systems that scale as usage and data volume grow significantly - Participate in on-call rotation and support production systems What They’re Looking For - 10+ years building production-grade software systems - Deep expertise in Python - Experience designing APIs (GraphQL preferred) - Strong experience designing scalable backend architectures - Experience modeling complex data systems and relational databases - Ability to make long-term architectural decisions - Comfort working in highly ambiguous, first-of-its-kind product environments - Strong collaboration skills across technical and scientific teams Nice to have: - Experience with GraphQL frameworks such as Strawberry - Experience with SQLAlchemy or similar ORM tools - Experience working with scientific, research, or highly complex datasets Why This Role Stands Out - Work on software that accelerates next-generation therapeutics - Architect a platform used by scientists designing living systems - High ownership and influence over system architecture - Deep technical challenges involving complex biological data models - Work at the intersection of biology, software engineering, and AI-driven research If you enjoy designing systems from first principles and want your work to influence the future of biotechnology, this is a rare opportunity.
