Job Description

Modern Family Law, a rapidly expanding national family law firm, is seeking an experienced and detailed Staff Accountant to join our growing Finance team.  This is an exciting opportunity for a financial professional who thrives in a fast-paced, multi-state environment and is eager to contribute to a mission-driven organization focused on helping clients move forward with their lives. 

The Staff Accountant plays a critical role in supporting the firm’s financial operations, including general ledger activities, reconciliations, compliance filings, and collaboration with cross-functional partners. This is a full-time, remote position reporting to the Senior Accountant.

Key Responsibilities: 

 

General Ledger & Reconciliations 

  • Record daily banking and financial transactions with accurate general ledger coding. 
  • Perform timely and accurate bank reconciliations, including operating and trust accounts. 
  • Maintain balance sheet integrity and proactively research and resolve discrepancies. 
  • Support month-end close activities to ensure accurate and complete financial statements. 

Compliance & Multi-State Filings 

  • Research and complete required state and local filings across multiple jurisdictions. 
  • Assist with year-end compliance activities, including preparation and filing of 1099s. 
  • Maintain organized documentation to support audits, reviews, and regulatory requirements. 

Accounts Payable & Vendor Oversight 

  • Support accounts payable processes, including vendor setup, invoice review, coding, and processing. 
  • Ensure invoices are reviewed and approved in accordance with firm policies and internal controls. 
  • Assist with vendor relationship management and issue resolution as needed. 

Accounts Receivable & Client Accounting Support 

  • Partner with Accounts Receivable team members on collections, trust replenishment, and reconciliations. 
  • Assist with resolving client chargebacks, billing discrepancies, and payment issues. 
  • Support accurate tracking and reporting of client-related financial activity. 

Finance Team & Business Support 

  • Assist the CFO and Senior Accountant with financial analysis, reporting, and supporting data as requested. 
  • Participate in cross-training and serve as backup support for Finance team members. 
  • Contribute to process improvements and system enhancements as the firm scales. 
  • Support special projects and ad hoc analyses as assigned.

Position Requirements: 

  • As our culture is remote-first, all employees are expected to have the capability to work from home with a reliable internet connection and to set up a workstation that supports productive work during normal business hours. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience required. 
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in an accounting or finance role required. 
  • Experience in a multi-location or multi-state organization preferred. 
  • Experience in the legal industry strongly preferred. 
  • Customer service experience a plus. 
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel skills. 
  • Experience with accounting, billing, and financial systems such as QuickBooks, TimeSolv, LawPay, and Salesforce preferred.

  • High attention to detail with the ability to maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
