Job Description

New York Times Cooking is looking for a strategic, dynamic and discerning editor to lead our talent strategy work, with a focus on cooking video.

Working cross-functionally with other leaders on the team, you’ll expand and help program our roster of superb contributors, who appear on our platforms and social channels, but increasingly also in Cooking content on their own channels. You’ll identify and engage with skilled recipe creators who are adept at cooking on camera and connecting with an audience — managing scouting, outreach, creative development and the relationships over time.

The ideal candidate is an electric and innovative strategic thinker with big ideas and a passion for food. You have the presence to represent Cooking in conversations externally and the confidence to develop and advocate for strategy internally. Expertise on the competitive landscape and YouTube, Instagram and TikTok is essential to success in this role, as is a knack for identifying the best and most unique voices in food.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City, and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Cooking leadership to articulate and advance our talent strategy
  • Scout unique culinary voices to bring into Cooking as contributors. Initiate high-level outreach, determine deliverables and serve as a primary point of contact, building relationships over time
  • Play a leading role in recipe planning, production and promotion, ensuring that we arrive at dynamic lineups and produce video and recipes that engage audiences at the level of quality associated with the Cooking brand
  • Be an expert on the competitive landscape: Keep a constant pulse on culture, trends and emerging formats and platforms.
  • Work with our audience and data insights teams to analyze performance and continually refine our strategy
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • This role reports to the NYT Cooking Director of Video.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience working with talent in editorial strategy or video production, specifically within the food or lifestyle media space
  • Strong editorial judgment; you have an instinct for which creators and recipes will engage an audience, and help us broaden the range of voices we feature
  • Expertise analyzing Youtube, Instagram and TikTok data, audience responses and other metrics to inform content strategy
  • Functional culinary knowledge; you are comfortable discussing recipe mechanics, testing processes and food quality with professional recipe developers and editors

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage business deliverables without losing sight of creative goals
  • Superb communication and organizational skills
  • Relentless curiosity and an energetic approach to finding talent and building relationships
  • A passion for food, cooking and the mission of The New York Times
