Job Description

Job Description

We’re looking for a Brand Designer with strong web and UX sensibilities to help shape how Tailscale shows up across our digital experiences.

This is a hands-on role for someone who cares deeply about craft, but also understands that great design is measured by how it performs. You’ll design and iterate on key web experiences, from landing pages to campaign surfaces, balancing brand expression with usability, clarity, and conversion.

You’ll work closely with web, growth, and content teams to create experiences that feel cohesive, intuitive, and distinctly Tailscale. This role is ideal for a designer who can move fluidly between visual design and UX thinking, and who enjoys seeing their work come to life in production.

Key Responsibilities

Design high-quality web experiences

  • Design landing pages, feature pages, and campaign experiences that are visually compelling and easy to use.
  • Apply strong hierarchy, layout, and interaction thinking to improve clarity and user flow.
  • Balance brand expression with usability and performance goals.
  • Understand and apply accessibility and inclusive design principles.

Translate brand into scalable web systems

  • Work within and extend our design system to create reusable, scalable components.
  • Improve templates, layouts, and patterns used across the site.
  • Ensure consistency while evolving the brand for digital environments.

Effectively manage projects and timelines

  • Own moderately complex projects and initiatives end-to-end, not just tasks, with guidance from Brand Design Lead.
  • Surface project ambiguity early and identify potential blockers, proactively proposing actionable solutions.
  • Prioritize deadlines effectively, balancing speed, quality, and craft to consistently deliver polished, production-ready assets across digital and print.
  • Maintains organized component and asset libraries that scale across the team, enabling others to easily adopt and build on established systems.

Support experimentation and iteration

  • Collaborate with the growth team on testing and improving page performance.
  • Thoughtfully iterate on designs based on data, feedback, and evolving priorities.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve user experience across key journeys.

Collaborate cross-functionally

  • Partner closely with web developers to ensure designs translate cleanly into production with minimal to no rework.
  • Work with marketing and content teams to bring campaigns and narratives to life across multiple platforms: print, digital, and motion.
  • Clearly and confidently explain design rationale and tradeoffs, understanding when to compromise and when to stand firm in design decisions.
  • Proactively communicate: share project status updates without prompting and provide timely, constructive, and actionable feedback on others’ work as needed.

What We Are Looking For

Strong brand and web design skills

  • 3-6+ years of experience in brand, marketing, or web design
  • Strong grasp of design fundamentals: typography, layout, color, balance, and hierarchy
  • Experience designing landing pages, marketing pages, or UI components for modern responsive or adaptive layouts

UX awareness and digital thinking

  • Ability to apply UX principles like usability, information hierarchy, and interaction patterns
  • Comfortable thinking about how design decisions impact user behavior and outcomes
  • Experience working on websites, landing pages, or digital campaigns

Technical and executional strength

  • Proficiency in Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and AfterEffects), and Google Slides
  • Strong attention to detail and organized file management (clean layers and labeled components make us very happy)
  • Experience working within or alongside design systems
  • Ability to deliver polished, production-ready designs and collaborate effectively cross-departments
  • Solid understanding of accessibility and inclusive design principles
  • Experience in print production, with an understanding of technical requirements and executional standards across out-of-home, events, and swag/merch applications

Communication and collaboration

  • Excellent communication skills, especially when working remotely and asynchronously
  • Ability to clearly present work and explain design decisions
  • Ability to take direction, ask clarifying questions, and thoughtfully incorporate feedback while maintaining design integrity
  • Consistently meets or beats deadlines, demonstrating increased trust, reliability, and ownership

Nice to Have

  • Experience working on high-growth marketing or product websites
  • Experience working on a remote or globally distributed team
  • Familiarity with experimentation or A/B testing workflows
  • Experience partnering closely with developers on implementation
  • Interest in developer tools, infrastructure, or technical products
  • An understanding of how design impacts conversion, engagement, and performance
  • Experience with motion graphics or simple animations
  • Technical illustration, data visualization, or diagramming experience
