About the Role
Location: USA Remote,
Candidates located in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia are strongly preferred due to a required one-time in-person visit to Bethesda, Maryland to collect a federal badge.
Engagement Type: 1099 Independent Contractor

Project Overview
CloudFactory is looking for detail-oriented individuals to support an AI evaluation project focused on research publications and citation data.
In this role, you’ll review scientific articles and structured citation records to ensure research information is accurate, properly linked, and correctly classified. Your work helps improve the quality and reliability of AI systems trained on research data.
Candidates with experience in AI data annotation, model evaluation, research review, or structured data validation are especially encouraged to apply.
Important Project Requirements:
To access the required research systems, contractors must complete a federal credentialing process, which includes:
- Passing a Tier 1 federal background check
- Completing fingerprinting at a local approved facility
- One in-person visit to Bethesda, Maryland to collect an official badge
- Following administrative steps that may take several weeks
The credentialing process may take several weeks, so we are looking for individuals who are responsive, organized, and able to follow through on administrative steps during this process.
Candidates located in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia are strongly preferred due to proximity to the badge pickup location.
Scope of Work (Deliverables)
As an Independent Contractor, you will manage your own workflow to provide the following high-quality deliverables:
- Metadata Validation: Review biomedical journal articles and validate structured metadata within specialized data management systems.
- Funding & Grant Identification: Independently analyze English-language articles to identify and record research funding acknowledgments, including government and private grant identifiers.
- Technical Linking: Identify and link related citations such as errata, retractions, and dataset DOIs (e.g., GenBank, Dryad, Figshare) to ensure data integrity.
- Classification: Apply correct status indicators to citations, filtering non-citable items and ensuring compliance with established data standards.
- Output Milestones: Manage your time and processes to meet a project throughput target of approximately 35 citations per hour while maintaining a high accuracy rate.
Contractor Requirements
- Expertise: High school diploma required (Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Library Science, or related fields preferred).
- Previous experience in data entry, metadata review, or structured data validation is expected.
- Technical Proficiency: Ability to navigate scientific journal articles, XML-formatted citations, and publisher websites independently.
- Equipment: Contractors must provide their own computer, high-speed internet, and a PIV card reader.
- Security Clearance: Must be able to pass a government background check to obtain the required security badge and system access.
- Language: Professional-level English reading comprehension and the ability to work confidently with complex written content.
- Ability to contribute ~35–40 hours per week through October 2026
- Authorized to work in the United States
Working Relationship & Environment
- Autonomy: As a 1099 contractor, you retain control over your work schedule and methods, provided that the project’s quality standards and deadlines are met.
- System Access: Access to the necessary data management systems is generally available 24/7 to allow for flexible scheduling.
- Remote Work: This is a 100% remote engagement.
- Professional Standards: Contractors are expected to adhere to the technical specifications and documentation provided for the project. Periodic quality audits will be conducted to ensure deliverables meet contract requirements.
